Air Quality
Radon
Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas. Radon comes from the natural decay of uranium, found in most soils. It is recommended that home owners test for radon in the lowest livable space of a home because the gas comes in the home through cracks and spaces in the bottom levels and moves upward. It is further recommended that homeowners seek mitigation if the results consistently yield 4 pCi/L or higher.
Short term test kits can be obtained from Marion Public Health.
The Ohio Department of Health licenses individuals for Radon mitigation. To find licensed Radon professional click here.
Mosquito Program
The mosquito program in Marion County consists of three components. In light of the West Nile Virus situation education of the public is our primary tool to protect the public. This is a joint effort between the Creating Healthy Communities Program Section and Environmental Health. Surveillance entails trapping of mosquitoes throughout the county to determine if the virus is present. We no longer collect and test birds however, we do take reports for mapping purposes. Mapping dead blue jays and crows is based on public reporting of incidents to the health department.

Nuisances
Every citizen has the right by law to call attention to problems such as rats, insects, garbage, trash, etc. that impinge on their health, safety and well-being. These problems are considered in the nuisance section of the Official Sanitary Code of Marion Public Health. Individuals do not have the right to harm neighbors. Complaints are investigated in a timely manner so as to maintain proper community sanitation standards. It should be noted that there are no housing codes in Marion County.

Tattoo and Body Piercings
The tattoo and body piercings program was established to help prevent the spread of disease that can be associated with the processes involved in tattooing or piercing. Diseases known to be associated with improper Tattoo and Body Piercings techniques include: Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Staff Infection, and HIV among others. The program consists of unannounced inspections of licensed facilities throughout the year to assure compliance with state and local laws. New and remodeled facilities are required to submit plans, which are reviewed, approved, and monitored until they are complete. Investigations are made on complaints submitted to the department in a timely manner to assure public safety. Tattoo and Body Piercing operations are only permitted at licensed facilities; any citizen believing to have received a tattoo at an unlicensed facility or at a home facility is encouraged to call the Health Department for investigation.
