The food program consists of five inspectional activities: Food Service Operations (FSO) (restaurants), Retail Food Establishments (RFE) (grocery stores), Food Vending Machines, Mobile Food Services and Temporary Food Operations (festivals). New and remodeled FSO and RFE construction plans are reviewed, approved and monitored until they are complete. Investigations of all food borne illnesses are completed with recommendations made to affected food operations.

Sanitarians in the department perform a wide variety of public health functions which include inspection, regulation, and enforcement of food facilities, public swimming pools/spas, campground/RV parks, manufactured home parks, beaches, and tattoo/body piercing establishments.

Anytime you suspect you may have contracted a foodborne illness, report it to your local health department, even if it is after you have recovered. The local public health department is an important part of the food safety system. Often, calls from concerned citizens are how outbreaks are first detected. If a public health official contacts you to find out more about an illness you had, your cooperation is important. In public health investigations, it can be as important to talk to healthy people as it is to ill people. Your cooperation may be needed even if you are not ill.
